Bite, Pint, and Overnight Awards 2017
Starting this year, I will begin my annual ‘Bite, Pint, and Overnight Awards,’ displaying my favorite places to grab a pint, have a pint, and stay the night over the last 365 days! A lot goes into this decision making process – quality, bang for your buck, style, and uniqueness.
You’ll find places from two continents and 7 countries, and my two favorite countries I’ve visited this year – Malaysia and Myanmar – take the top spots in all three categories.
Keep exploring, and enjoy yourself wherever you go!
Bite:
1. Long Beach Hawker Center – Penang, Malaysia. All kinds of delectable food from around the world. The satay is especially good.
2. Pho 88 – Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines. Amazing Vietnamese restaurant with next level coffee.
3. Raohe Night Market – Taipei, Taiwan. The best night market in Taipei. A classic surf & turf of oysters and steak for two can be had for 500 NTD (18 USD).
4. N1 Coffee & Co. – Hong Kong. Possibly the best brunch on the planet. Go for the traditional English Breakfast and a bagel with cream cheese.
5. Ruins of St. Paul’s street vendors – Macau. Delicious pork bun sandwiches. Wash it down with a pearl milk tea and add a famous Portuguese egg tart for an extra snack.
Pint:
1. Kipling Bar – Yangon, Myanmar. Go colonial at this gem inside the Governor’s Residence.
2. Flatstick Pub – Seattle, Washington, USA. Mini golf inside a bar while tasting Washington craft beer.
3. Purple Turtle, Port Barton, Philippines. Enjoy a cold one in paradise while enjoying live music.
4. Barcode – Taipei, Taiwan. Head out on the rooftop patio for a Heineken or craft brew.
5. HTT – Bagan, Myanmar. In addition to the beer, take advantage of the 1,500 Kyat ($1.50 USD) buy one get one free whiskey sours in one of the most majestic places in the world.
Overnight:
1. Song of Travel – Inle Lake, Myanmar. This hostel is shaped like a boom box. Must stay if you’re a budget traveler in Myanmar.
2. Turublien Inn – Long Beach, Philippines. Unique stay directly on the longest white sand beach in the Philippines.
3. Ostello Bello Hostel – Mandalay, Myanmar. Have a Burmese cigar on the rooftop of this hostel in this old capital of Burma.
4. Ascott – Macau. One of the best non gaming casinos in an ideal location. That pool area.
5. Old Penang Hostel – Penang, Malaysia. Great home base for exploring the underrated destination of Penang.
If you recognize any place on this list or think I messed up, let me know in the comments! What are some of your favorite places of the last 365 days?
